In the heart of the enchanting rolling hills, resided a boy named Shepherd. His existence was essentially untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to tend to his herd of rams.
Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes across the single tree on the hilltop were his constant companions. Day upon day, watching over his wards inculcated in here him a sense of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. During one such occasion out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy orchestrated a naughty scheme.
Tales of wolves hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.
One morning he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no beast.
The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This game laughed for a few more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the herd. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.
The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
